Sheffield, TX

Talk about a small town campground!  The town is a few blocks of old buildings.  The camping is two spots on the edge of town in a gravel yard.  But it has power and water on one site, none on the other.  I only saw half of the visage but did not see any place to buy anything.  /we had read that in the reviews so brought anything we might need.  I got fuel in Ft. Stockton even though I didn’t meed it yet.  It is a way to go before the next fuel station.

Nice old west ride out here, meaning lots of open land views.  Really no signs of habitation for nearly 100 miles. There were times you couldn’t even see a ranch road for miles.  This might be the most remote village I’ve been in this side of Guatemala.

Now that the sun has set (8 PM) it is cooling  down and we went for a short walk.  Two little mutts came out to challenge us, the Aussie went for Skye but we yelled and I tapped his belly with my foot.  They left.  One went after a cat but the cat told him what to do with himself and he went home, not to be seen again on our walk.

Did I mention that it was warm today?  98° with 8% humidity.  Those are not typos.  Glad to have the power hookup to run the AC for a rare use of that appliance.

We have neighbors from FL.  On their way to Alaska!  New to camping they have had this camper two weeks.  Then down to Baja California on their way home.  They have spent a couple years living on a sailboat so it’s not all new to them.  Fairly young with a maybe 13 yo daughter.  And we thought we were going on a trip.

Three views of the slightly changing land east of Van Horn.

Walking around the village

Carlene meeting the cows, calf, donkey and bull.
Skye wanted to but the donkey kept bolting so I kept Skye away.

  2. Donkeys are cute but man do they have a nasty kick. Seems Skye wants to be friends with everyone and everything typical Golden.
