Cheraw 2

A beautiful day!  Upper 60s and sunny all day.

First a walk on the boardwalk along the lake.  A trail leads from the campground over the dam to a boardwalk on the edge of the lake over to the park office.  That included a swim for Skye.  Then right after lunch we drove to the other end of the park where there are a couple of trails.  There is a 2 mile loop and a 4 mile loop off of that.  But he 4 mile loop is flooded so we did the 2.

Then a run into Cheraw to see the town.  Nice town!  Lots of big beautiful very old houses in the historic district.  Seems that a lot of Charleston’s wealthy folks came up here during the Civil War when the Union got to close to Charleston.  They were followed by many others from different parts of SC.  When Gen. Sherman came along he found a lot of those fancy valuables they’d brought here.  But he left the town pretty much intact when he left, unlike his march through Georgia.

Our frost stop in Cheraw was the Caffeinated Cow, a coffee and ice cream shop.  No matter the weather they have something for you.  It was a nice day so we had some ice cream and sat outside on the sidewalk to eat it.  Lots of friendly people came by and said hello.

Then we took a walk around the center of town; then out a few streets to the birthplace of Dizzy Gillespie.  He lived here until he was 16.

Finally we drove to the riverside park to see the Great Pee Dee River.  It was flooded, probably 4 feet up from normal.

Back at camp for a nice sunset.

The lake looks a bit high

That’s camp on the other side
