Squaw Lake 3, a hike & prison

There are some trails, mostly herd paths, in the gravel hills around the campground.  They go all over the hills between here and the Colorado River.  Lots of fine views of the river and the nice green riperian area.  We spent the morning out there.

Later we went into Yuma to see the Yuma Territorial Prison, 1876 to 1909.  Although it was reputed as "the hellhole of the west" it was quite modern for it's time.  As it developed it came to have electricity, flush toilets, ventilation and the best library in this part of AZ.  It was still a crowded prison in a very hot place.

On our way out of town we toured the historic downtown area.  Nice quiet arrangement of shops along a wide main street.  It was built wide to turn around a 20 mule team.

Prison guardhouse

Entrance gate, there was a big wall there in the day

View north on the Colorado, from the guardhouse

Typical 6 man cell
