After trying to get an early start this morning we did finally get off. But first needed to find a fuse. Naturally Mike has a large assortment of fuses in the coach. Except for this one. We eventually found Napa auto parts and now have several. This fuse is on the taillights for the Jeep while it is being towed, so the coach lights are active on the car while in tow. Like trailer lights.
After that we had clear sailing all across NM and well into TX. Well, 212 miles into TX, out of 868 mi. to reach Louisiana. Pretty cool change of scenery as we cross the Chihuahuan Desert, the stark barrenness of western NM is the most barren place on the trip. Then the relatively lush Rio Grande valley in Las Cruces, and later the slow change as we begin to enter the Texas Hill Country. Not in the hill country yet but the change is there.
This is the last night we’ll see desert type plants. As we get towards Houston tomorrow we’ll actually have crossed the Hill Country. But tonight we ar win a “campground” near Balmorhea. This is a truck stop that had the fine idea of adding a campground on the adjacent land. It is simple and basic with few amenities yet has full hookups, 50 amp electric, water and sewer for $20/night. And right off I-10. Yet here we barely hear the highway and don’t hear the trucks next door either. They do have a “garden” and nature path. It’s a 5 acre patch of Prickly Pear cactus and aloe with a couple other species I don’t recognize. In fact there is a variety of Prickly Pear I have not seen before. The segments are elongated rather than round as all other varieties, yet still having the same form and spines.
We’ll start with a couple photos I stole off Facebook
Gun E Bear, Doc McCoy and Diamond Rustler
The rest are views form our campground tonight in Balmorhea, TX
