Ft. Davis TX, Davis Mountain State Park

Nice drive north through Alpine TX.  We did that last year too, it's about the only good way west from Terlingua, even though it is north!  Alpine is a nice small city of about 5000 population that looks much larger, as is the case with most western towns.  The population figure on the sign at the edge of town shows how many people live there, just like home, but here they all live in the village.  People are not living on every 10 acres in all directions.  That land is ranch land and while people live there it is on parcels measured in sections rather than acres.  At least that is my theory on why a town of 4000 (Richmond pop.) looks 5 times larger that Richmond.

After settling in to the campground we went on a 4 mile hike along the northern border of the park.

Just north of the park is the McDonald Observatory, featured in a couple of these photos.  We plan to visit it tomorrow night for some star gazing.  This is a very dark area, very little light pollution.  I was just outside looking at the sky.  In this case I might wish for fewer trees!
