McKinney Falls SP, Austin TX

Sunny drive deeper into Texas.  Took US 190 to avoid Interstate highway.  Very nice road, even though such things as big truck size fuel stations and rest areas or anywhere to pull off the road are scarce.  It's a trade off.

We got out for a short hike over to the upper McKinney Falls.  They're pretty small but you can see that they have done a lot of erosion work in the soft limestone.  We hope for more tomorrow although they talk of 100% chance of rain.  Carlene had wanted to see the bats fly out of their perch under a bridge- a local famous daily event- but the bats are in Mexico until Feb. They travel in the winter too.  Maybe next time.  The park also has a 500 year old Cyprus tree.  Pretty cool, it sprouted before the first white guys came around.  There is supposed to be an old stone camp site there too but we didn't see it.

All this is just a few miles outside of Austin.  We are actually in between Austin and the airport.  Surprisingly not as noisy as I'd expected.  We can hear some highway noise but it's cool enough that we have the door closed and that keeps it rather quiet inside.

On with the picture show!
