On the Road Again! Van Horn TX

It was a delightful sunny day and fairly warm too!  We finally left Terlingua after 12 days, by far the longest we have ever stayed there.  Other years it was always bittersweet leaving.  This time we felt like we had been there and done plenty and were ready for the next step.  We had a great time, enjoyed every day, enjoyed every hike.  We were not sick of being there, just ready to be nomads again.

On to Van Horn Texas.  It was 180 or so miles through vast open country.  At one point we topped a hill and i could see the road ahead over a long plain.  So I clocked it, 11 miles!  And we went from 2500’ in Terlingua to 4100’ here.  That may be why they had so much snow & ice?  Actually there is still some snow here.  Coming in to town there were open areas with thin snow cover.  Here in the RV park we had snow beside the camper when we arrived.  That patch melted this afternoon.  We took Skye for a walk around about a 4 block circle and ran into several snow patches.  And one sight I did not expect.  A TDOT dump truck with a big ol snowplow on the front.  I didn’t think they had those out here!  No wing plow.  But it looked like a salt or sand spreader on the back.  Who would expect a sander in the desert?  Sand spreads everywhere naturally on most days.  But you don’t have to go far to find material to put in it!

We made a quick run to the grocery store.  Still small but better stocked than the little store in Terlingua.  Actually, the Richmond Market has more variety than even this store.

On to Deming NM tomorrow.  And crossing into the next time zone about 5 miles west of here.  Then on to Safford AZ the next day for a week or so of boondocking.

  1. The snow out there is just to make you feel at home. Just a little taste to keep you wondering and thinking “ man I’m sure glad I’m not shoveling right now “😀

Do you know the meaning behind the stack rail cars ?
