They just reopened the road to Van Horn this afternoon, so we could go up tomorrow. But then I talked with the campground and they still have snow and ice on the ground. It’ll probably melt tomorrow. Tomorrow night is supposedly 10º warmer here too. So we’re going to Van Horn and continuing the journey on Wednesday. Oh dear, one more day in the Park. 😉 I believe that will be the final version of the plan. We have never been in Terlingua this long! After that it looks continuing warmer trend. Safford AZ should be in the 60s and up to 70º+ over the next 2 weeks. Nights in the 30s and 40s!
So, today we went for a hike in the Big Bend NP on the Chimneys Trail. We have done that a couple times in earlier years. It may have been our first hike on the first trip. It’s a very nice hike, a bit downhill so we have a slight climb back up to the truck. But 400’ over 2.4 miles isn’t anything. We didn’t quite get to the chimneys (ancient eroded volcanic plugs) this time. We had to get back to camp to get propane. They only fill tanks from 1-3 PM weekdays. Got back at 2:50. Got the gas then took Skye out for her usual walk.
We have seen and photographed this millipede critter in Safford but only as a dried exoskeleton

Still close to 0 degrees here. More snow. We got about 12” of fluffy snow over night . The heavy snow stopped around 4 am and then the flurries throughout the day gave another 6 inches of fluffy snow.
ReplyDeleteSnow was deep enough that the underneath of Peppers car was dragging through the snow as I moved it to snowblow.
Still pretty windy too. Should be in the teens the rest of the week.
Are those millipedes poisonous? The South American species are black, quite docile and non-poisonous. I have to echo Sheriff Dill, 3 degrees F this morning. This afternoon removed 18" of snow from the camper roof. What a chore! And, there is still a good 2" of ice and crusty snow that wouldn't budge.
ReplyDeleteIf we were leaving tomorrow, it would never happen. No way to to remove that crust at the temperatures we have.
