Tybee Island & Ft. Pulaski

Beautiful sunny day topping out at 51 degrees.  Had a good <2 mile hike here in the park early this morning.  Looked over some salt marshes and a couple gator pools.  No gators today.

Tybee Island has an immense beach running nearly six miles.  It was not very busy today, probably due to the wind.  When it is so unoccupied we just ignore the rules and let Callahan run free.  We had lunch on the beach and walked for a good hour until we got cold.

Fort Pulaski was a Civil War fort that traded hands a couple times during the war.  It was named for a Polish soldier who came to the Colonies after meeting Ben Franklin in Paris.  He found himself in charge of the Cavalry in 1777 but was killed the next year.  The fort is situated on the Savannah River downstream from the city, making it a key point for either side.  It was modified after the war to it's present form.  It was abandoned in the 1880s and the next year the village around it was blown down in a hurricane.

  1. Thanks for doing this. I’ll be following in some of you footsteps as I head to WR in a week or so. All depends on weather as to when I leave. Be safe!
