Empire Ranch 3, hiking in Madera Canyon

A little warmer this morning at 30 degrees.  Went over to Madera Canyon on the Green Valley side of the Santa Rita Mountains.  Those are the ones we photograph every day on our west side.  Carlene really wanted to go up Mount Wrightson (9453') but we could see a lot of snow and read reports of 4-6" of snow up there.  So we chose Josephine Saddle, half way up and 7100', up from 5480' starting point.  Good trail, nice open treadway and fairly even going most of the way.  Some rocks occasionally.  But we saw snow almost immediately.  The final half mile was all snow after going through several regions of intermittent snow.  We hiked through about 3" at the deepest section.  The saddle was all wooded so we didn't get much view.  One spot allowed a view of Wrightson.

Back at camp for some more chips and salsa.  The sunset was only good for a few moments then went black.  Kind of odd.  This place usually offers excellent sunsets that last for a half hour.

Come on back in Callahan.  "I don't want to; you're going to leave me!"

This appears to be a Road Runner, but he's a big one and he's in a tree!  Unusual.

Snow!

Oh Boy!  More snow!

I came 4000 miles to hike in snow?

A first for me.  Hiking on snow while wearing a T-shirt and jeans!

On the saddle

Wrightson from the saddle, almost 3 more miles of trail to get there.  And another 2000' elevation.  Not happening in these conditions.
