Van Horn, TX

This looks like our last night in Texas until the return trip.  Just as well, even West Texas is expecting some cold and maybe even snowy weather.  We can beat the snow by moving west again tomorrow.  It'll be cold in Deming NM but no snow.
We have passed through Van Horn a few times but never stopped for any more than diesel.  Kind of interesting little town.  We decided to check out the Clark Hotel Museum.  The hotel was built in 1909 and remodeled a couple times since then.  Our tour guide was Patricia Golden, about our age, a once time surfer girl from San Diego.  She has a huge knowledge of the hotel; seems to be acting curator without a title.  We all hit it off and she gave us the whole tour, including the officially closed upstairs.  Many of the rooms upstairs are furnished by various families with Van Horn history.  That adds a lot to the overall interest of the museum.  The building itself has reversed face since it was built.  Originally the front of the hotel faced the railroad tracks since that was the focus of the whole town.  Years later the railroad diminished and the hotel faced the street.  It's a matter of changing the use of the front and rear entrances.  Like renaming the "back door" as "front door" and moving the sign.  I think we spent a couple hours in there and kept her well past closing time.  She clearly didn't care.  Full of enthusiasm for talking about the place.
