Empire Ranch day 6; Bisbee, AZ

This was Bisbee day.  We like Bisbee, AZ as you might guess since it is our third visit there.  Colorful little town built on the hillsides with a lot of stairs to get around between levels.  Streets are narrow with a lot of shops for all kinds of artistic goods and some good food too.  Lunch was Mole Chicken Enchiladas.  The feature of the day was the Queen Mine Tour.  It's a copper mine that is nearly 100 years old.  You can imagine that it has seen a lot of different technology used to get the ore out.  Starting with hand powered hammer driven chisel drills to place black powder up to compressed air power drills for dynamite charges.  Hundreds of miles of tunnels in this mine and a couple thousand miles in all the mines around Bisbee.

We also met a group of Vermont Bicycle Tour people in town.  One couple, Christine & David, was from Randolph and live a half mile from where Carlene's sister Mary just bought a place, and knew the former owner.

A high view of Bisbee from Rt 80 going into town:

I think we have seen this Indian before

A couple views of my favorite "antique" store.  It has room after room of 'stuff'.  You can almost get lost in there.  3 floors.

The Queen Mine Tour was on our list last year and we didn't get in.  This year we made advance reservations:

An ore cart and a shift boss's wheeled cart to get around the mine

dynamite holes with fuses

With a gap in the timbers they can see when something is starting to sag

That's the miners version of the porta-potty, on wheels

  1. After viewing you photographs, I'm going to have to put Bisby on my list of places to visit.
