Hike day. We went up Rt 266 to Stockton Pass and a little beyond toward Bonita. But we were a mile from Bonita and could see that far ahead. Nothing but an intersection! A little research back at camp shows there are a few more buildings, but not many. I found one building that was a store, and formerly a bar. Billy the Kid shot a blacksmith there, he had been bullying Billy. Not a smart thing, picking on Billy.
Stockton Pass has two campgrounds, and a third just a half mile away. Two are free camping, the other is fee. All you get for the fee is a concrete picnic table and a fireplace. I think I saw a water spigot in the group area. And a permanent outhouse.
Five more miles back toward Safford is another camp area, the Gillespie Wash. We stopped there to look and go for a hike. This one has a stream in it! Water in AZ! Skye was soooo happy. The forest service road was parallel the stream. We walked up the road, Skye ran up the stream. We went about 2 miles up, it eventually left the stream and up into the foothills of Mt Graham. It’s ranch country so there were several gates to go through. Each with a sign to close it behind you. Actually the road crossed the stream several times. Few good rocks to step on so we both came home with wet boots. But this is Arizona, they were dry again with an hour in the sun!
