Camp Haekel 10

It was rainy last night but we stayed dry!

Road Trip!  We’ve talked about where to go next and Carlene has wanted to go to the Chiricahua Mountains south of us.  There is a BLM campground there but I wanted to scout it before taking the camper in there.  So off we went!

Good thing we did that.  It is OK in many respects but it is not well suited to our 39’ trailer.  There are a couple sites that could accommodate us but they are occupied.  And it is very tight getting into the place.  Just not right for us.  We are now thinking we’ll just start east next Monday.  We’ll be back to Chiricahua later.  We also have 2 weeks to get to SC, so this will make sure it is a leisurely trip.

So there we were, south of Bowie AZ wondering what to do the rest of the day.  Map checking showed us Fort Bowie ruins just 10 miles further south.  It was a 1.5 mile hike into  the fort ruins.  Took us over 3 hours to walk in, look around and walk out, 4.8 miles total.  Of course it started to rain when we were in there.  A nice cold rain with wind.  That cut the tour short.  We took some shelter in the welcome center, but one of us had to stay outside with Skye because she wasn’t welcome inside.  It rained a little more on the walk out.  The most surprising thing about that was that in the Arizona dry air the wind dried my wet jeans!  Even in the low 50’s.  The fort is at 5000’.  After the initial rain that got parts of my jeans wet they dried in the wind despite continued light showers.  Oh, and there was hail for a few minutes too!

Got back to the truck and were met by a woman who was waiting for her husband to come back from the same hike.  But she has supposed to drive around on the handicap access road and meet him at the fort.  But she couldn’t find the road!  She she was asking everyone if they had seen him.  We talked a while and he came back, mumbling about how she apparently had wanted him to walk it both ways.  There was no cell service at the parking lot.
