Sugarloaf Mountain

Our last hike in Arizona this year 😢.  So we hike to the highest point in Chiricahua Nat’l Monument.  Sugarloaf is 7275’. It’s a 2 mile hike round trip. 😁. The views were great, 360° and just about all of the park.  We lingered at the fire outlook on top for quite a while.  We had it all to ourselves.  We met 3 people on the walk back down.  And we had snow on the trail!   In the sheltered places where the sun don’t shine there was still some remnants of the snowfall on Friday.

Once back in Willcox we made another trip to the grocery store for supplies to start the trip east. We’ve planned the first couple nights and will look for a state park after that. It’s 6-9 days depending on the pace.

In camp we checked out for the morning and learned a bit more about the bartender / campground lady. Cindy is 5th generation Willcox. Her family was here when Geronimo was wandering about taking their cattle. Her grandparents used to tell her stories from their parents.  They would put some cattle in a pen which  Geronimo would take but otherwise leave them alone.

Some showers for the road, a few maintenance items on the truck, some Skye walking & playing etc. Then hanging out with some chips & guacamole in the sun. OK, the breeze was blowing the chips so we came back inside.
Now some Knappogue Castle (Irish whisky).  Happy St Paddy’s Day!☘️

We have a HH winery outside El Paso set for tomorrow night and a self-service campground in Balmorhea TX the next night.

First thing inside the park is a pair of deer

Then just up the road, turkeys

Looking north.  Dos Cabezas on the left, Mt Graham on the right

The fire lookout building.  No tower, no trees to necessitate a tower
The trail description says that the last 0.2 miles is steep and rocky; didn’t seem it to us.
Reminded myself, Park Service doesn’t write these for hikers, it’s for people who haven’t been out of the city for 20 years

See the signpost in the next photo

This is at the entry of a ranch. Probably no significance other than the rancher’s sense of humor

One more Arizona sunset
