Solomon AZ, BLM Boondock

We drove a whopping 11 miles from the campground to a piece of BLM land on Haecker Road.  Our nearest neighbors are 1/2 mile away.  That should keep COVID-19 away from camp!  We are 1 mile from the main road, US 70 and although we are on a paved road it gets very little use.

Then we took the scenic Black Hills Back Country Byway, a scenic 21 mile mountain road that we had seen while scouting yesterday.  We took 80 pictures, it takes me a long time to sort out what to post from all that.  We met a guy and his Golden Retriever while at our first stop.  He was just picking up trash around a kiosk, apparently just because he felt like it.  Nice 2 yr old dog.  He had a small Class C camper and towed a Jeep with 2 kayaks and well set up for back country roads.  We saw a couple others and I'll comment on those in the photos.  We were very pleasantly surprised that we didn't meet any traffic on the road because it is so narrow.  In many places I don't know how we would have gotten past each other.  Lots of great places to stop & look around.  21 miles took 4 hours.  Then we went in to a couple mining towns, Clifton and Morenci, to look around.  Quite a mix of new and old buildings.

This is a unique horse transporter.  Plus there are dog kennels in front of the horse, or mule in this case.  This rig belongs to a trapper who is after a mountain lion which is taking young beef.  This rancher has lost 14 head.  The trapper thinks it is a female with 2 yearlings.  If that is correct he will not do anything about it.

The current owner of the Twin C is Mr. Manuz.  We met him while we were reading this sign.  He is the son-in-law of the founders on the sign.  He is also the rancher who is losing young stock to the lion.

The ranch

Cal likes the scenery too

This was the old pumice mine mentioned in the sign above

I spotted this squirrel crossing the road and he hung around for a photo op

Some more cattle

The Phelps Dodge copper mine in the distance

Sometimes when we get out to look around Cal will get in Carlene's seat to wait

Bridge over the Gila River, this picnic area doesn't appear to get much use

Back at camp we could see the rain on Graham Mountain
