Safford 3

A good day for a walk.

The rain went somewhere else, although we can still see it in the mountains around us, even tonight.  Mt Graham has been somewhat cloudy all day with some breaks now and then.
When we got up this morning there were cattle right outside the camper.  We’re used to that at Empire Ranch, but this is the first time we’ve seen them here.  It’s posted as open range and has cattle guards in the road so we know they’re here, we just have not seen them.
We made a quick trip to fill a propane tank since it’s Friday and now have 2 full tanks.  It’s cooler at night now, 38 last night, so we are back to running the heat again.  The previous several nights we had it on but only heard it run just before sunup.  Last night was more than that.
We walked about 2.5 miles out and around from camp, similar to what we did several other times in other years.  We went out farther to the SW than previously but found ourselves on familiar ground coming back.  In fact, I recognized one meadow we were in, full of yellow flowers with one barrel cactus in the middle.  It looks flat out here in the wide area photos, but it has many eroded places so walking is a frequent up and down.
Skye had herself some quail hunting experience today.  She got onto a covey of scaled quail, at least 5, and was having a lot of fun running around with them.  I told her she was supposed to point, but she didn’t understand.
She also kind of guided us back to camp.  We all started in the general direction but she was up ahead, as usual, but kept going in the right direction without much input from us.
She got back to camp ahead of us and was resting under the camper when we arrived, only 3 minutes later.
