Another cool morning in the 20s. Another slow start to let it warm up a bit. Forecast for a high around 50 in Terlingua, meaning cooler up in the mountains.
We decided to hike part way up the Dodson Trail, because we’ve never been there. It’s a total of 11.5 miles and that gets you to another trail high up on the south rim. So there was no question of not going all the way up. It started at a trailhead we used before, the Homer Wilson Ranch. Homer had 4000 sheep and 2500 goats. Must have been a busy place. The trail went gradually down for quite a ways. We usually like to go up to start. Then it followed a dry wash before starting to climb. We had some pretty nice views from up there.
We met several people on this hike. A group of 7, being 3 generation plus a friend. They had been out for 2 nights. And a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary by visiting the Park. John & Marilyn live in the Catskills and winter in New Braunfels TX.
Off to Ft Davis tomorrow. Just over 100 miles north. We have a camp site in the state park and tickets for a Atar Party at the McDonald Observatory tomorrow night. Supposed to be mostly clear, so the viewing should be good. We haven’t been able to do this for a couple years now.
Looks like you are having a great hiking trip so far! Stay warm and hopefully no snow! It’s cold here!!
