Arivaca, La Siesta 2

When we got up this morning the cell service was back on.  Apparently Verizon had repaired the cell overnight.

We went back to the Buenos Aires Visitor Center this morning.  The volunteer was there and talked with us quite a while.  Turns out they have over 80 boondocking sites on the refuge. The refuge has a prime mission of regenerating the grassland and recovering the Masked Bobwhite Quail population.  Grasslands were predominant over several states many years ago.  Now this refuge is removing the mesquite trees that some ranchers planted for soil erosion but the mesquite spread so much that they shaded out many native plants. We have seen that in Empire too.

We saw the Masked Bobwhites in the big shaded enclosure where they are raised for eventual release to the wild.
There was a nature trail that we took with Skye on a leash.  Met a couple from the Keene NH area. They’re out for two months.
Drove out the 11 mile auto road to see the sights. Parked and walked a side road for a mile out to Mormon Lake.  It’s dry. Skye was sad.  But still a nice walk.
After that we explored two roads that have the majority of the campsites.  We were very pleased with the results; lots of good sites, many big enough for us and good vacancy.  We won’t be using them now but this is going on the list of places for the future.
Returning to Arivaca we stopped at the restaurant, La Guitana Cantina (the guitar) for supper.  Quesadilla for me and chili for Carlene.  Good food, good price, we got out for $25.  It wasn’t the authentic Mexican we hoped for, being 20 miles from the border, but good.
Off the Tucson tomorrow.

I think we’re looking for a dog wash in Tucson
She’s been in so many of these puddles.
