Empire Ranch 11, the final night

Woke up to bright sun and lots of fresh snow visible on the mountains.  And frost here at camp.  The snow was a lot lower of Mt Wrightson this morning, and a few others as we saw later in the day.

But the forecast for Saturday is plumb cold!  Even snow in the forecast for Sonoita.  So we have decided to move on.  We spent the morning researching places on the other side of Wrightson, south of Green Valley towards Tubac.  But this weekend is the Tubac Arts Festivl, so everything is full over there.  Well, OK, 50 miles further west is a nice sounding area near the town of Arivaca.  We found a campground there so we’ll be plugged in and have plenty of fuel.  It is also almost 1000’ lower so it’ll be just rain and only near freezing.  It also has some BLM land nearby that we can explore for possible later camping.  We need one more great place to boondock.

After that we’ll be headed for the fairgrounds in Tucson to spend some time before moving on to Phoenix and EOT!  We have already arranged to meet some friends next Friday for a visit to the Desert Museum NW of Tucson.

Anyway, after lunch today we went for a walk beyond the Cienegita Campground (4 miles north) taking the road out to a pond.  OK, the pond is now a mudhole and the road doesn’t go beyond it.  We thought it did.  So we wandered around and went back up to the main road.  Wandering about in this country is pretty easy.  The hills are rolling and open so we can always see major landmarks like mountains and easily go where we want.  We crossed the road to go  out and about taking a large circle route until we found a road.  We followed that to the end at a feed trough then doubled back to the campground.

While driving home we encountered a hawk flying on his hunt for food out east of the truck.  We followed him for a while but never got a great look at him.

Frost on the truck!

Mt Wrightson with more snow

More frost!

This gives a certain view of why these are called
Sky Islands out here.
